It provides valuable SEO information about your WordPress site, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Performance:<\/strong> It shows you how your WordPress website performs in search results &#8211; how many impressions it has, how many clicks, or on what page it ranks for different keywords;<\/li><li><strong>Backlinks:<\/strong> It shows you what sites are linking to you, and what they are linking to;<\/li><li><strong>Mobile usability:<\/strong> It lets you know if and what problems occur with your WordPress site when it&#8217;s displayed on mobile devices;<\/li><li><strong>Errors and warnings:<\/strong> Google Search Console will also let you know if there&#8217;s something wrong with your site, such as indexing or crawling issues, 404 &#8220;Page not found&#8221; errors, and more;<\/li><li><strong>Core web vitals:<\/strong> This is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/vitals\/\">an important metric and ranking signal<\/a> that will be implemented starting with May 21, 2021. It focuses on user experience, meaning: loading time, visual stability, and interactivity. Nailing this with a WordPress site won&#8217;t be easy, especially on mobile devices. So, basically, this covers everything. Therefore, you don&#8217;t have to worry about it, especially in the future when you might want to add a subdomain or switch from <code>www<\/code> to <code>non-www<\/code> or vice-versa;<\/li><li><strong>URL prefix: <\/strong>This only includes URLs with the specified prefix. For example, it will treat <code>https:\/\/example.com\/my-page<\/code> differently than <code>https:\/\/www.example.com\/my-page<\/code> because one link has <code>www<\/code> and the other doesn&#8217;t.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, unless you need to go with <strong>URL prefix <\/strong>for whatever reason, I recommend always choosing the <strong>Domain<\/strong> property. That&#8217;s what I&#8217;ll use for this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two downsides to this property, though:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>You <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/thread\/5780259?hl=en&amp;msgid=5783947\">can&#8217;t connect your Google Search Console account to Google Analytics Universal<\/a>, which is the version before Google Analytics 4. Some might still use or need that;<\/li><li>It only allows verification via DNS, which is more tricky for beginners.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, choose the <strong>Domain<\/strong> property, type in your domain without <code>www<\/code>, <code>http<\/code>, or <code>https<\/code>, and click on the <strong>Continue<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"718\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/add-domain-search-console.png\" alt=\"add domain in google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/add-domain-search-console.png 840w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/add-domain-search-console-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/add-domain-search-console-768x656.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Step 3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A popup will appear, requiring you to verify your WordPress site by copying a TXT record on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/dns\/what-is-dns\/\">DNS (Domain Name System)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"702\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/copy-dns-record-search-console.png\" alt=\"google search console dns record verification\" class=\"wp-image-6161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/copy-dns-record-search-console.png 702w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/copy-dns-record-search-console-300x278.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, this is where it gets tricky, mainly for beginners. And I can&#8217;t help you with details because there&#8217;s no one-size-fits-all solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Where you have registered your domain;<\/li><li>If and what web host you&#8217;ve connected the domain to;<\/li><li>If you&#8217;re using cPanel or another control panel on your web host.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>if you&#8217;re a beginner<\/strong>, your best bet is to contact the support of the following, and ask them to do it for you or offer some guidance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Your domain registrar (Godaddy, Namecheap, etc.) if you haven&#8217;t connected the domain to a web host yet. In some cases, the web host is also a domain registrar, and you get 2-in-1.<\/li><li>Your web host if you&#8217;ve connected the domain to it;<\/li><li>Any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/cdn\/what-is-a-cdn\/\">CDN (Content Delivery Network)<\/a> service that requires you to change the <a href=\"https:\/\/kinsta.com\/knowledgebase\/what-is-a-nameserver\/\">Nameservers<\/a> on your domain registrar with theirs. So, for example, if you&#8217;re using Cloudflare, then you&#8217;ll have to add the TXT record there.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Google also tries to help you by providing some guides for a handful of DNS providers\/domain registrars. Click on the drop-down menu next to <strong>Instructions for<\/strong> to view them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"702\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dns-provider-instructions-search-console.png\" alt=\"google search console dns provider instructions\" class=\"wp-image-6171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dns-provider-instructions-search-console.png 702w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dns-provider-instructions-search-console-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re more experienced, and you know where and how to access your domain&#8217;s DNS records, then all you have to do is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Create a <strong>TXT<\/strong> record;<\/li><li>Under <strong>Host<\/strong>, or <strong>Name<\/strong>, or whatever the field might be called, add your domain (e.g. <code>example.com<\/code>) without <code>www<\/code>, <code>http<\/code>, or <code>https<\/code>. In some cases, you can also add <code>@<\/code>, which stands for <code>root<\/code>, which is your domain;<\/li><li>Leave the <strong>TTL<\/strong> to <strong>Automatic<\/strong>, if it&#8217;s available, or add\/select <strong>3600 seconds<\/strong> or <strong>1 hour<\/strong>, depending on the option. If you have to add it manually, remember that the time has to be in seconds.<\/li><li>In the <strong>Value<\/strong>, or <strong>Record<\/strong>, or <strong>Content<\/strong>, or whatever they might call the field, add the code copied from the Google Search Console verification popup (see the above image).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it looks in Cloudflare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"454\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/txt-record-cloudflare.png\" alt=\"Adding a Google Search Console TXT record in Cloudflare\" class=\"wp-image-6198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/txt-record-cloudflare.png 840w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/txt-record-cloudflare-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/txt-record-cloudflare-768x415.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption>Adding a Google Search Console TXT record in Cloudflare<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leave the record there<\/strong> even after you&#8217;ve verified your WordPress site in Google Search Console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Step 4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After you&#8217;ve created the TXT record, you have to wait a while until the new DNS record is propagated. It might take anywhere between a minute or 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, it always took about a minute. I never had to wait long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, after waiting at least a minute, click the <strong>Verify<\/strong> button to see if your WordPress site got verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"702\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/verify-google-search-console.png\" alt=\"verify dns record in google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/verify-google-search-console.png 702w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/verify-google-search-console-300x278.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If it doesn&#8217;t get verified, you can leave the tab open and just wait some more, or click on <strong>Verify Later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Step 5<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it gets verified, a popup with <strong>Ownership verified<\/strong> will appear, and your WordPress site will be added to Google Search Console. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"702\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/go-to-property-search-console.png\" alt=\"ownership verified google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/go-to-property-search-console.png 702w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/go-to-property-search-console-300x158.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on <strong>Go to property<\/strong>, which will probably prompt you with a Welcome popup. Click the <strong>Start<\/strong> button on that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"664\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/welcome-popup-search-console.png\" alt=\"start with google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/welcome-popup-search-console.png 664w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/welcome-popup-search-console-300x295.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Step 6<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The last thing you have to do to properly add your WordPress site to Google Search Console is to submit your sitemap. A sitemap is like a blueprint that helps search engines to discover, crawl, and index your web pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting with the 5.5 version, WordPress provides a built-in sitemap, which you can find by adding <code>\/wp-sitemap.xml<\/code> after your domain, like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>https:&#47;&#47;example.com\/wp-sitemap.xml<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that if search engines are discouraged from indexing your WordPress site, the default sitemap won&#8217;t appear. It will return a 404 &#8220;Page not found&#8221; error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That setting is found in WordPress, in <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Reading<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Search engine visibility<\/strong>. It&#8217;s disabled by default, but who knows how it might end up enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"748\" height=\"273\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/search-visibility-wordpress.png\" alt=\"search engine visibility in wordpress settings\" class=\"wp-image-6173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/search-visibility-wordpress.png 748w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/search-visibility-wordpress-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 748px) 100vw, 748px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For the default WordPress sitemap to work, you also need to have a PHP extension installed, called <strong>SimpleXML<\/strong>. Otherwise, you&#8217;ll get a 501 &#8220;Not implemented&#8221; status code. It&#8217;s your web host&#8217;s job to have that extension installed. Virtually all have it, so it shouldn&#8217;t be an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, most of you will likely use <a href=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/essential-free-wordpress-plugins\/#seo-framework\">an SEO plugin<\/a>. Those plugins might work with WordPress&#8217; default sitemap or create their own. Therefore, <strong>the link to the sitemap might differ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the sitemap generated by the popular Yoast SEO plugin is found at <code>\/sitemap_index.xml<\/code>. Other plugins might generate a sitemap at <code>\/sitemap.xml<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, find out what&#8217;s the correct link to your sitemap, then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Copy it;<\/li><li>Go to Google Search Console and select <strong>Sitemaps<\/strong> from the menu;<\/li><li>Paste the link in the <strong>Add a new sitemap<\/strong> field;<\/li><li>Click <strong>Submit<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/submit-wordpress-sitemap-search-console-1.png\" alt=\"submit wordpress sitemap in google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/submit-wordpress-sitemap-search-console-1.png 840w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/submit-wordpress-sitemap-search-console-1-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/submit-wordpress-sitemap-search-console-1-768x355.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After submitting your sitemap, it will appear below, with a <strong>Success<\/strong> status, hopefully. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wordpress-sitemap-success-search-console.png\" alt=\"wordpress sitemap success status in google search console\" class=\"wp-image-6177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wordpress-sitemap-success-search-console.png 840w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wordpress-sitemap-success-search-console-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/readyship.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wordpress-sitemap-success-search-console-768x348.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases, it might take a bit for Google to fetch it, and you might even see a <strong>Couldn&#8217;t fetch<\/strong> status for a bit. Don&#8217;t worry unless it lasts for too many hours.
